One of the major projects in the Spring this year was to have automatic sprinklers for my front and back lawns. Not only automatic sprinklers save water but they also water uniformly over a particular area. Depending on the size of the lawn you should take the decisions - how many circuits / lateral connections you need, what are the type of sprinkler heads needed etc.
From the main line you need to cut off a small section and place a 'T' so that your housing water supply is not disturbed.
This is the main supply line to your sprinklers where depending on teh code of your region you need to have either a backflow preventer or a Stop valve. In our case we are on a share well and hence had to put a Backflow Preventer(BP) . The BP valve is a little costly but doing the labor yourself can save you thousands of dollars on your project. If you are a little hesitant on adding a 'T' and putting a BP valve yourself you can take help of a professional here but the rest of the whole project you can easily do yourself.
( For example I got a quote of $6000 and another of $8000 to do the whole project and finished it myself at around $850 ).

Here is how a Backflow preventer looks like - this is the one that is installed at my home.
The fruit of labor.
